What is Stone Massage?
Although Stone Massage is in fashion now, it is an ancient and effective relaxing, oriental massage technique that has been practised for years, even in western society.
The body massage is practised with hot stones and aromatic oils to stimulate your senses and your body’s energy channels.
Known as the ancestor of acupuncture, it is an alternative method to
treat and preserve ones health. In Chinese medicine for example,
volcanic, basaltic stones were used thousands of years ago to balance
universal energy, or chi, due to the strong connection between stones
and body.
Nowadays, Stone Massage is becoming very popular and successful in Spas
and Wellness Centres all over the world, but it is obvious that it is
not just a trend. In fact, our exporting company in the United States
has been teaching Stone Massage for over 28 years and exports it
products and training method to 22 countries.
Do you use other stones as well as hot stones during the Stone Massage?
As an option, you can add Cold Stones and semiprecious Chakra stones to
obtain further stimulation, increased efficiency and wellbeing.
Additionally, Stone Massage stones can also be incorporated into other
therapies such as facial treatments, manicures or pedicures.
What differentiates Stone Massage to other techniques?
The most important and major difference of our Stone Massage technique
resides in the stones. The stones are the most important part of this
modality. Their composition, their origin and their authenticity are
vital to obtain a beneficial effect on body and mind, and, above all,
remain faithful and respectful to a technique that has been applied
during hundreds of generations.
This massage cannot and should not be practised with just any stone.
Due to their special mineral composition and properties, hot stones
used during the massage should be volcanic, basaltic stones. Composed
of dense and dark lava, they are ideal for heat retention and if used
correctly, do not burn the skin. Additionally, their fine texture
allows them to heat and cool hundreds of times without being damaged
(other porous stones may break with time and use). Also volcanic stones
are ideal for Stone Massage because they are natural and have not been
manipulated; their rounded and smooth texture allows the therapist to
work easily with the stones during the therapy.
Where do the basaltic stones come from?
It is vital that the basaltic stones originate from areas and heights
where they have not been manipulated by mankind or affected by
pollution, since this could alter their conductivity and benefits. In Spain, the stones we import come from Peru, Argentina and Indonesia.
Our stones are also collected one by one to assure maximum quality.
Then, after rigorous quality control, they are classified according to
their size, shape and properties for their different applications.
and the cold stones?
The cold stones can originate from lakes, oceans or rivers (although
most originate from the latter). The efficiency of these sedimentary
stones can also be attributed to the nature of their minerals, which
accentuate cold retention. Their texture should be soft and silky when
frozen or cooled, allowing them to be manipulated without the need of
lubricant. When they come in contact with water, the colour of these
stones changes to a dark shade of green.
What benefits do the different types of stones produce during the Stone Massage?
Hot
stones stimulate the blood flow and cellular metabolism, increasing the
migration of leucocytes as well as the respiratory and cardiac rhythm. They
also relax the body at a very deep level inducing a sense of
relaxation. Prolonged application of heat penetrates into the muscle
tissue and articulations helping
treat delicate conditions, detoxifying and stimulating microcirculation
due to oxygen supply. The curing and damaged tissue repair process is
also accelerated.
Cold stones are an ideal compliment when alternated with hot stones,
especially during facials and tired leg treatments. They are excellent
to decongest specific areas, reducing hyperaemia and calming
irritation. Generally, these stones produce a stimulating effect.
What effect do they have on energies?
Our physical body functions with electromagnetic currents and the
ancient oriental belief maintains that Stone Massage moves the energies
reproduced by our organs and cells. This energy movement takes place
thanks to the bio-resonance of the stones.
As the atmosphere is charged with negative ions, the resonance
neutralises the increase of positive ions that takes place when we
suffer from stress or any alteration or chemical disequilibrium in our
body. Therefore the stones amplify the energies, balancing positive and
negative ions.
How do you heat volcanic stones?
The stones should be heated in an electric heater at a temperature of
47º to 50º centigrade. They should never be heated in ovens,
microwaves, etc. as this could be dangerous and inappropriate for the
maintenance of the stones.
What are the Chakras?
In Orient, the Chakras are the 7 energy centres of our bodies. Each
Chakra has a different function and corresponds to an organ or body
part. The semiprecious stones are used to balance these energy centres
when there is a disturbance in any of the Chakras. Through the
semiprecious stones and their resonance, Chakras are activated,
cleansed and balanced to reduce stress and alleviate tension,
eliminating blockages, neutralising energies and promoting harmony and
general wellbeing.
What does one feel when receiving a Stone Massage? What is the general reaction?
The reaction is extremely positive. Clients comment that it is a very
different style to what they are accustomed to and that they are
surprised as to how pleasant it is and how good they feel after
receiving it.
The Stone Massage is a gentle massage during which the client feels
100% pampered and in harmony with oneself; it produces a sense of
absolute relaxation. That is why it is important to learn how to
practise the massage effectively, applying the adequate pressure
without loosing contact with the client.
Is it a profitable treatment?
The Stone Massage is a tremendously profitable treatment for two simple reasons:
1. Practically anything oriental and spiritual is in fashion and more
popular than ever at the moment. People love to try new things,
especially if it is authentic and involves tradition.
2. The stones are only purchased once and, if used correctly, should
last for a lifetime; therefore the cost is recovered very quickly.
Can anybody practise a Stone Massage?
Stone Massages should be practised only by professionals and qualified
therapists with extense massage knowledge. Also, those masseurs or
therapists who wish to do Stone Massage should train with us to learn
how to position the stones, where the energy points are, how to adapt
the stones to the massage and above all, become aware of the
contraindications of Stone Massage. This specialised technique can be
learnt in one day. It is obligatory to take the course because pupils
must bear in mind that as well as a relaxation therapy, working with
basaltic stones means working with energies, which should not be taken
lightly.
